Final Exam Review

1. Timeliness - The story is about an event or thing that happened recently.
2. Proximity - The story takes place somewhere close to the reader, a known location.
3. Human Interest - A topic that people find interesting.
4. Prominence - The story catches the viewers eye of having potential.
5. Conflict - The story has a situation in which there is a problem or a problem is created.
6. Interviews - The act of having a conversation with a subject of choice to help convey the story.
7. Research - Learning about a topic prior to interviewing or writing the story.
8. Quotations - Giving the person who said the quote full credit for their words, but using what they said to help tell the story.
9. Yes-no question - A question that can be to easily answered by the subjects, tends to not be a good question if it can be answered with a simple yes or no.
10. follow-up question - A question that you ask in response to the person you are interviewing answer that helps get more information out of them.
11. Objective writing - A style of writing that is fact driven.
12. Transition paragraph - A paragraph used to switch the subject of the story or to help add on to what was already stated.
13. Hard news story - A story containing politics or serious subjects.
14. Soft news story - A story containing entertainment and lifestyles.
15. Inverted Pyramid - The pyramid displaying the most newsworthy info, important details, and other general background information.
16. Third-person point of view - A view consisting of no I's and We's, the story is told through a perspective in which the person writing was not where the story took place.
17. 5 Ws and H lead - Who,What,Where,When,Why,How, The beginning statement of a story.
18. editing - Revising and cleaning up a story so it flows and makes more sense.
19. attribution - adding something to the story that helps move it along.
20. paraphrase - To put someone else's words into your own by changing the way the goal of the sentence is said and stated.
21. fragmentary quotation - A quotation that is changed by the journalist, not the original quote.
22. direct quotation - The exact words from the person interviewed.
23. partial quotation - Some of the words said from a person interviewed.
24. Uses of quotations - To help tell the story and see what a persons view on the subject is.
25. When to use quotations - When what the person said will fit with what is being stated.
26. When quotations are unnecessary or not desired - When they do not relate to what is being said and the information being told through the story.
27. Editorial - A article written by a journalist on a subject with their opinion on it.
28. editorial page - An article expressing the opinion of the editor.
29. columns - A article where a writer expresses their opinion.
30. editorial that criticizes - The writers opinion criticizes the subject or situation.
31. editorial that explains - The writer gives information on a topic along with their opinion.
32. editorial that persuades - The writer tries to make you agree with them on a topic.
33. letter to the editor - A letter sent to editors that contains issues of concern from its readers.
