My Favorite Cover

Favorite Portrait: ESPN The Magazine, October 13, 2014, Derek Jeter

Description: "With the New York Yankees closing in on a fall vacation, it meant that the final home game for Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter would come in late September, when ESPN The Magazine was set to celebrate all things Cleveland. The future Hall of Famer's retirement dominated the sports world; the chorus of send-offs from columnists, TV hosts and commercials served as an early-fall replacement for October playoff talk. But The Magazine chose a cover that reflects more quiet reverence than extended standing ovation. It depicts The Captain--the most iconic baseball player of his era--in his tradition of leading the Yankees onto the field before each home game. This time, though, Jeter is silhouetted out of the frame and into an all-white background. Jeter isn't only running onto the field--but into immortality." - See more at: http://www.magazine.org/asme/magazine-cover-contest/past-winners-finalists/2015-winners-finalists#sthash.C7RPtEmp.dpuf

My Reason: I really like this portrait because it sends a really interesting and awesome message as simply as it can. It saying, that the person in the photo, Jeter, isn't afraid of his future, infact he is running right towards it. It emphasizes Jeters decision, and it does so in many ways. The first way is the lighting, everything is bright, it almost seems like he is in the clouds. Secondly, the absence of everything else but him, Its obvious the is the subject of the photo since nothing else is in it, this creates a really cool effect. They also kept his shadow in the future, which is quite symbolic since the magazine is about what he did in the past.
